Editorial
New England notes.
Region-wide observations the almanac keeps returning to.
The gateway hierarchy
Bradley is primary for the Pioneer Valley and most of Western Massachusetts; Logan is the long-haul anchor for the entire region; Providence for Southwest leverage; Manchester and Albany as occasional cheaper substitutes; Burlington for northern Vermont and inbound foliage.
The ground penalty
The drive to Logan is rarely free — count $30 in fuel and parking when comparing a Logan fare to a Bradley fare. A $40 difference becomes a wash; $80 is the threshold where Logan clearly wins.
Tuesday rule
Domestic fares from all five gateways are most often cheapest on Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and Saturday returns are typically the worst-priced day of the week.
